  2. Play a card. Tap a card to lift it, then press Play (Space). Legal cards look bright.
  3. Decide trump. Choose Order it up (Space) or Pass (S); Go alone (A) is a toggle. The dealer sees Pick it up (Space).

A hand in progress. The token by the dealer shows trump; the brass tab marks a bower.

Euchre on Tavernly has one rule set: stick the dealer on, going alone allowed, and no no-trump call. It has 4 seats only, no app, no ratings and no ranked play.

Each decision and card has a 20-second timer. On expiry, the table passes, names a suit for a stuck dealer, or plays a safe card. It never goes alone for you.

Learn by playing

Choose Learn by playing for a coached game with five lesson steps.

  1. Read the turn-up. Your partner sits across, and the dealer has turned up the queen of diamonds. The coach asks if diamonds should become trump.
  2. Order it up. You hold both red jacks and the ace of diamonds, which makes strong trumps.
  3. Lead the right bower. The dealer has taken the queen and put one card down. Your jack of diamonds is the highest trump.
  4. Follow the led suit. Next comes the left bower, the jack of hearts, then the ace. Follow the suit led if you can.

The rules in two minutes

Euchre uses 24 cards: 9 through ace in each suit. You and your partner try to win tricks after a team makes trump. The bowers outrank every other trump card. Making trump commits your team to taking at least 3 of the hand's 5 tricks.

Word Meaning
Turn-up The card turned face up after the deal
Kitty The last 3 cards, kept face down and unplayed
Bower One of the two jacks that rank highest in trump
Makers The team that made trump
Euchred The makers took fewer than 3 tricks
March The makers took all 5 tricks
  1. Deal. Give each player 5 cards and turn the next card face up. The last 3 form the kitty; the deal moves left each hand.
  2. Order it up or pass. Starting left of the dealer, accept the turn-up's suit or pass; the dealer speaks last. If accepted, the dealer picks it up and discards one card.
  3. Name a suit if all pass. Turn the turn-up face down; its suit can no longer be trump. Starting left of the dealer, each player may name another suit or pass. With stick the dealer, the dealer must name one after three passes.
  4. Go alone, optionally. Only the player who makes trump can choose this. Their partner puts their cards down and sits out the hand.
  5. Follow suit and win tricks. The player left of the dealer leads, or the next active player; follow suit if able, otherwise play any card. Highest trump wins, or highest led-suit card without trump; the winner leads next.
  6. Score the hand. Award points from the table below after all 5 tricks.

In Euchre on Tavernly, if the sitting-out partner is the dealer, nobody picks up the turn-up. It stays on the kitty.

Trump rank, highest to lowest Card
Right bower Jack of trump
Left bower Other jack of the same colour
Ace Ace of trump
King King of trump
Queen Queen of trump
10 10 of trump
9 9 of trump

Other suits rank ace, king, queen, jack, 10, 9. The left bower belongs to trump when you follow suit.

Tips and warnings

  • Count trump before you order it up. Your team needs at least 3 tricks to score.
  • Treat the left bower as trump. Its printed suit does not determine when you must follow suit.
  • Plan for stick the dealer. If you deal and the first three players pass in round two, you must name a suit.
  • Weigh going alone. Your partner sits out, and taking fewer than 3 tricks gives defenders 2 points.
